Yakutsk in Siberia is among the coldest of places on Earth and the coldest inhabited place on Earth. In RGSG, the Northeastern region is of a similar nature.

Key points (village facts)
- Pipes freeze almost all the time. No reliable running water. Water comes from ice/snow. Toilets are outside. Showers once a week. Heating the shower/sauna room takes 5 hours and lots of firewood is needed.
- When the temperature is below -55C, it's too dangerous to go to school.
- Proper clothing; knees are apparently prone to freezing. Something I would never have thought of.
- Good fatty foods with lots of energy to stay warm; burns more energy in the cold.
- Firewood daily. Hunting and ice fishing for food.
Many of these problems could probably be solved if facilities are deep underground (since Etmos is very futuristic) but obviously it's not feasible for a small village. Underground would also restrict movement since you can only go where tunnels have already been built.
More interesting tidbits
- Horses have thick skin and fur, can survive up to -70C
- Lots of dogs wandering around outside
- Going outside has a long preparation period due to extreme conditions
- Having a little bit of chubby fat is probably a good thing especially for kids
City facts
- Cars are parked in heated garages and/or the battery is protected in some way. Engines are usually running all day if driving is needed.
- Even Yakutsk residents usually only last 20 minutes outside even with the amount of clothing they wear.
- Fur is a must. Usually coats are made from furs of arctic animals.
- Open air markets sell meat and fish where it (of course) freezes outside.
Extreme miscellany
- Some places in Alaska have a "roadkill list". You can call a number to be put on this list. If a moose or deer is killed by a vehicle, your family can be among the first to receive resources from the roadkill.
- Morning ice baths. A lost tradition of the Northeast. Being closer to death and out of one's comfort zone (closer to death) can make one feel alive. Since many comfortable facilities are underground, ice baths are obsolete; people opt for warmer and more comfortable options. Jisha uses this knowledge to attempt to strengthen herself and her people. Ice baths + calisthenics; awakening of mind and body.
- Beauty standards; a woman's beauty not only in her looks, but also in her mannerisms and temperament. Can be compared to naturally beautiful occurrences (found in nature duh). Relates to "beautiful soul" in RGSG which is a nice coincidence.
- Highly competitive nature among beautiful women due to men dying off in wars in the highly militant nature of the Northeast.
- More technologically advanced societies will use more energy. More energy used means more potential for waste. Etmos staved off the climate crisis. How is the world using sustainable energy? Solar is not viable in the Northeast due to long nights in the winter. Wind and nuclear are more viable options. But coal, oil, and wood are still huge contributors to energy. In this extreme cold, some people gotta do what they gotta do to survive.
