what Peter Griffin (explains the joke) taught me

Hey guys, Peter Griffin here to clear the confusion. The post above is a known as a meme. Memes are generally short quips or clips of similar nature that circulate around the Internet. This particular meme is eye catching, as well as funny, for a couple of reasons.

First if all, it grabs your attention with the barrel of a gun being pointed in your face. This shock sends adrenaline through your body, setting it in a fight or flight mode. In order to accurately judge whether one must fight or flee, the threat must accurately be discerned. Now the viewer’s full attention is captured.

Secondly, the image uses bright colors and a vivid art style. The contrast between the grim muzzle of a firearm and the klutzy panic of a bright female countenance is something that cannot be ignored. It may even be off putting to some, cultivating a morbid curiosity in those individuals. Due to these two attention grabbing juxtapositions, the viewer has no choice but to comprehend the details of this meme.

When we begin to read the overlaid text, we immediately notice it is written in Impact font. This is an homage to the infancy of text-based memes that many may find unfunny today. Because it raises a feeling similar to that of unwelcome nostalgia, the meme could be said to be unfunny as well. However, that is not the case. To understand this, we must understand the content of the text.

When we read the quip, we can clearly see that there is a bit of irony involved here, since it simply reads “There is no meme here”. This is clearly a false statement since the meme must be observed to be understood, and this bit of trickery tickles the funny bone slightly.

The zinger truly comes in the next line where it reads “take off your clothes”, presumably uttered by the klutzy female mentioned prior. This is a strange line to utter, and there are multiple reasons for this, which each layer adding to the humor.

To comprehend the humor at a deeper level, we must first understand the subject of the image. The female depicted above is known as Lillia. Lillia is a champion in the world-famous video game League of Legends, where she is the 149th champion to be released. This makes her the second-to-newest champion, since there are currently 150 champions in the game. To expand on the related topic, Lillia is a timid centaur-like creature who has never truly traversed the world outside her garden. The fact that this green babe from the woods can point a gun, a tool of murder, at the viewer of the image is off-putting and borderline taboo, contributing to the humor of the meme. In addition to this, she is presumably telling us to “take off [our] clothes”, which is an act of dominance usually performed prior to sexual acts. Though dominatrixes and the like exist, it is ingrained in human nature for such things to be slightly out of the norm, since males are generally stronger than females, and males generally prefer to be in a dominant position during sex. This adds another layer to the humor. Finally, we have Lillia’s biological makeup which is the nail in the coffin, or the last straw, if you will. Since she is not a pure human and is instead half of a bovine creature, it would naturally be taboo to engage in sexual intercourse with her.

In conclusion, this is an exquisite meme where the humor is derived from high contrast and social and biological taboos. I rate this meme a 0/10; it’s got a little something for everyone.
