when it comes down to pure skill level, i personally do not see much of a difference between males and females with similar dedication and training methods.
there is a small caveat, however. the bell curve for iqs for males is wider than the one for females. men are top geniuses and also bottom retards (see prison population % men and women)
gaming is some of the most toxic environments for women (as you're well aware), and this drives them away from playing. not everyone has the mental fortitude to endure that day after day. hell, i'm one example. if i were a girl i highly doubt i'd be into gaming due to my mental weakness. it sucks but i always disable all forms of chat when i play any game. i can't take it... (also why i don't use social media but i digress)
statistically if males are 100x more likely to play the game, they will be at least 100x more likely to become a pro.
men have taken over positions of power in society from the beginning as well, and since women have been relegated to subservient roles, it's taken (and is still taking, especially in Eastern countries) society to adapt to this change. women and girls who see only boys and no girls playing video games will be discouraged from playing. i know someone who didn't join the chess club in elementary school because they were all boys. it becomes a negative feedback loop.
this adversity makes it all the more challenging for a girl to fight through and make it to the top. you're fighting an uphill battle that men don't face.
at the end of the day it's important to judge an individual as that: an individual. statistically yes women are worse than men at gaming skill, but there are many factors that play into this, and i can say for certain that intelligence is not one of them. plus, the sample size for the human population is so incredibly large that there will always be every type of person for both genders.
slowly but surely, if the population in male-dominated skill-based environments becomes a 50/50 split between men and women, there will be less discrimination. only when everyone has the opportunity to walk the same path can we have a fair vantage point for analysis.
the only question is how can we get there? we can only try our hardest to get everyone to be more accepting...
